		Desecration of Jewish Cemetery in Grodno, Belarus Belarus 2002-12-01 00:00:00 The Grodno Jewish cemetery was established about 270 years ago and housed, by our calculations, about 100,000 bodies. In the �60�s the Communist government built a soccer stadium on top of the cemetery: the tombstones were removed, but the bodies remained untouched. The cemetery was dishonored, but the dead were not defiled. In the winter of 2002, the Government of Belarus decided to create a sport complex here, with facilities and housing to Olympic standards. To this end, a big section of the cemetery was excavated, with vast quantities of bones and human remains used as road fill, and hundreds of truckloads of earth and remains dumped into a valley.

		Belarus Demonstration on July 21, 2004 Belarus 2004-07-21 00:00:00 These photos show how people gathered in the center of the Belarusian capital to sum up the outcomes of 10 years of Lukashenka�s ruling. The result was unpredictable. Riot police broke up the rally. �Supermen� from the Ministry of internal affairs and other law-enforcing structures executed order �grab-and-pull�. 60 people were arrested. 		Sons of imprisoned Belarus opposition candidate, Mikhail Marinich, meet with Senator John McCain. Belarus 2004-12-13 00:00:00 The Embassy of the United States of America expresses its concern over the recent arrest of former Belarusian government minister and ambassador Mikhail Marinich. As Belarus develops its democracy, including the holding of important parliamentary elections this year, the arrest of Mr. Marinich, who has been an active and open participant in Belarus� political scene, creates an atmosphere that could call into question the intention of the Belarusian leadership and Belarusian authorities to conduct political discourse and elections freely, fairly and without use of threat or intimidation of those political figures who may express different views. History has shown that stability depends on government�s ability to protect and respect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. We call upon Belarus� authorities, especially its legal and judicial organs, to respect and uphold the legal rights and freedoms of Mr. Marinich and all Belarusians.
